Issue 4: Echoes
Heather Drew
Ovis
Corvus
Image Descriptions: these two images depict children in an unusual fashion. The first image shows a child in a short summer dress and ankle boots with a ram skull for a head skipping rope. The second image shows a child with a bird skull for a head in formal attire shorts and a buttoned up coat with pleated socks and dress shoes, holding a stick. They are facing one another on the page and are watercolour and ink in grey scale.
Artist Statement: the focus of this series of paintings is a feeling of discomfort through contrast. Morbid in the depiction of death in monochrome with the harsh white of the skulls and heavy black shadows against emptiness. Cheerful in the depiction of young children playing in patterned socks and a pleated dress. A reminder, there is no black OR white, only what they create together.
